Our Daily Question - by Elizabeth Reynolds

I was given this little book as a Secret Santa gift at the end of last year called “A Sentence In A Day” and each day of the year, it asks a simple question to which you need to write a brief answer to for that day. For example, what did you get done today that you’ve been putting off? When was the last time you went to the cinema? What’s the next book you’re going to read? Is there anything you regret about today? Etc etc.

In years to come it will give a great little snapshot of where I was at and what I was doing in 2021. Sometimes, questions like the first one above, and other ones like it like, who have you been meaning to call? actually give me some reminders and even accountability to get around to doing some of those sorts of things. And this is what made me think that we should perhaps ask ourselves questions like this daily all the time.

Or perhaps just one question. Everyday.

What did you do for God’s kingdom today?

What a challenge. I may have got round to making that appointment or I finally did the vacuuming. I ate chicken for lunch or I drank two litres of water today. But what did I do for God today? What effort did I make for His kingdom?

You might be able to write down some big things like, “I worked on my book explaining spiritual gifts for young people,” or “I went into the city and ministered to some homeless people.” But it might also be something simple like, “I prayed for such and such today,” or “I gave such and such a call today to bless them.”

I wonder if you need to make a conscious effort to do something (at least one thing) that is in direct obedience to Jesus when he said: “Seek not the things of this world but seek ye first to build up the kingdom of God, and to establish his righteousness.” (Matthew 6:38)

Maybe you would benefit from writing something down each day in the form of a journal. And don’t feel that saying a prayer for someone is some little insignificant thing. When you pray for someone, you fight for them. You stand in the gap and come before the Father on their behalf for whatever it is they need.

“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand so that we would walk in them.” (Ephesians 2:10)

What can you / did you do today that built up the kingdom of God?
