Seek - by Elizabeth Reynolds
Seek first the kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these things shall be added to you. Matthew 6:33
Jesus says this when he is telling us not to worry about tomorrow. When we worry about what we shall wear, what we shall eat and drink. Food, drink, and may I be bold and say what we wear can also relate to our shelter in a way. Food, water and shelter are the three basic needs for human survival. In a secular, evolution-believing world, everything about life is about survival. Everything. From how living things behave, to what they look like all comes down to survival. (Either survival or reproduction – which in the long run is still about survival of the species.)
The world (and as Jesus puts it, the pagans) run around after these things. But He tells Christians there is something more important than survival. One, because survival in this world is only a fraction of our story with God. And two, because in verse 32, He says that our Heavenly Father knows we need these things.
If we are like ‘the pagans’ and run around fretting about how we’re going to survive, then we will miss the great adventure of life. We’ll go from moment to moment just constantly thinking about the next moment, and never being in this moment. Enjoying God’s creation. Enjoying God’s goodness to us. Enjoying God’s presence.
Our Father says “I’ve got that bit taken care of, if only you would seek Me first. Seek My kingdom first and seek My righteousness first. This is what is most important for you. Do not run after the things that will help you survive. But rather, run after the source of all life.
When we are seeking God first in each moment of our life, we will naturally be living in His presence daily, moment by moment. When we hand over our needs to Him, we are worshipping Him as our One True Lord.
So get your priorities aligned. Get right with God and seek His presence, His kingdom and His righteousness, and you will be held safe under His everlasting wings and the promise is, you will have everything you need. Everything He knows you need.
